Humane Society for Shelter Pets

Pull Quote - TerroristsThe Humane Society for Shelter Pets seeks to dry up donations to the Humane Society of the United States by denigrating HSUS and encouraging animal lovers to support local animal shelters instead. Its work complements that of the Center for Consumer Freedom project HumaneWatch. The group dissolved as a standalone organization in 2013 and is now a trade name of the Center for Organizational Research and Education.

Richard Berman does not serve as executive director of the HSSP. He claims that the group was started by others, and that Berman and Co. provided pro bono assistance in setting it up. However, tax filings show that HSSP shares an address with Berman and Co., and the group has paid the company for management services and made a cash grant to CCF.

At the time of its founding, HSSP’s board of directors contained a number of prominent conservative activists, including Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and Michelle Bernard, the former CEO of the Independent Women’s Forum.

HSSP relies on much of the same information used by HumaneWatch to divert donations from the Humane Society of the United States. The group took out full-page ads in several major newspapers encouraging people not to donate to HSUS. The director of HSSP is a local animal shelter worker who filmed a video about HSSP at her place of employment, leading to an ethics complaint.
